300 MSEK IS INVESTED TO ESTABLISH TWO NEW INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH CENTERS IN LUND

In order to strengthen the regions competitiveness within mobile communications, Mobile Heights along with Ericsson, Sony Ericsson, UiQ Technology, ABB, Perlos, Infineon, UMC, Cadence, the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University (LTH), Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH), VINNOVA and Region Skåne make a long-term investment in research on software and silicon design.

The two new research centers are focused on System Design on Silicon (SOS) and Embedded Applications Software Engineering (EASE). They are based at the Faculty of Engineering at the Lund University (LTH).

- Skilled researchers and dynamic environments in which universities and the industry meet are central in order to increase the number of students and Ph.D. candidates at LTH and other universities, says Mats Lindoff, Vice President Technology Officer at Sony Ericsson.

The two research centers will create 50 new job opportunities, and within a few years the Mobile Heights cluster initiative is expected to create more than a thousand new jobs.

Ericsson in Lund is a world-leader in integrated electronics and mobile phone software, a position we have achieved much due to our close collaboration with LTH. Now we are looking to further strengthen education and research within these areas at LTH and BTH, says Lars Tilly, head of research at Ericsson Mobile Platforms.

- This is an important strategic investment for BTH, and we are very excited about working together with LTH and mobile communications companies specializing in software design, says Claes Wohlin, Deputy Vice Chancellor at BTH.

Industrial research centers, also called Industry Excellence Centers, are pilot projects supported by VINNOVA, which provides long-term support for innovative research and development centers at institutions for higher learning, and to a larger extent co-financed by the industry. The funding organizations invest in each research center more than 10 MSEK per year for a period of maximum ten years. Of the annual financing, 1.75 MSEK is provided by VINNOVA, 3.5 MSEK by the institutions for higher learning, and 5.25 MSEK by the industry.

- The circuit design as well as the mobile communications and service software initiatives enjoy a substantial support from a growing industry. The centers strengthen the research and development competence at both the universities and the industry in accordance with the needs, demands and requests of the international marketplace, says Per Ericsson, Director General at VINNOVA.

-LTH views research related to wireless communication and embedded systems as very important parts of our program, and we need joint efforts in recruiting and research financing. Mobile Heights is a unique and comprehensive initiative, says Gunilla Jönsson, Dean at LTH.
